Layered Strawberry Dessert

The strawberry season is in full swing, and here in the Lied Lodge kitchen we’re finding lots of tasty ways to serve this summer fruit. All of our berries come fresh-picked from the fields at Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard in Nebraska City, so they’ve traveled about two miles by the time they make their way to your plate. Local food tastes better!

Today I’ll share a recipe for Layered Strawberry Dessert — it’s a classic. White cake, strawberries, sauce, and whipped cream. And if you don’t want to slave in a hot kitchen during these hot summer days, I’ve included some shortcuts to help speed things along for you. Enjoy!

Today I’ll share a recipe for Bacon Chicken Asparagus Wraps with Orzo Pasta Salad

Out of the Cubicle, and Into the Fresh Air

May 07 by in General, Nature tagged , , , , , , with 1 comment

Not all of us are fortunate to work at a place that has acres of forests, rolling hills, streambeds, wooden bridges, and wildlife — all right out the back door.

But as a Conference Planning Manager for Lied Lodge at Arbor Day Farm, I get to surround myself with these natural elements every day. I know, I know… this is not the typical workplace setting. Many of you reading this right now trudge along in traffic to get to the office, circle endlessly in parking garages looking for a space, lug your stuff through the concrete jungle before sitting down in your cubicle for a solid eight hours and usually more. I feel your pain, and I sympathize.

Regions of France Wine Dinner a Big Hit

Mar 22 by in General tagged , , , with no comments

We had such an amazing time with the Regions of France Wine Dinner here at Lied Lodge on Saturday night. With 104 people in attendance, we ate French food “chateau-style,” drank delicious French wines, made new friends, and even learned a lot, too.

Our very own Chef Nick Maloney and wine expert Josh Tebben of Johnson Brothers Liquor Company both did a fine job of explaining and guiding us through all five courses of food and wine, painting a vivid picture of the regions, flavors, and the intricacies of the grapes in our glasses.

A Successful Meeting is One That is Well Planned

Feb 25 by in General, Meetings & Events tagged , , with no comments

The act of “planning” is a multi-billion dollar industry in America. Think about all the tools, the apps, the devices, and even the professionals that define a series of steps to be carried out or goals to be accomplished.

If you’ve ever coordinated a meeting, a special event, a wedding, anything, really… then you know that planning is an essential part of the process. Winston Churchill’s old saying, “He who fails to plan is planning to fail,” couldn’t be more accurate.

I’ve been in the planning business — planning meetings, specifically — for the past nine years. I enjoy helping individuals and companies work through the dozens of details and pull off successful, stress-free conferences.

I’ll share two tried-and-true tips with you in the hopes of making your next meeting planning process easy…

Survive Summer’s Heat with Ice Cream

For those of us in the Midwest, the month of August typically holds some of the hottest days of the entire summer. I’m not a huge fan of sweltering heat, but I do enjoy a cool dessert… and they taste even better on hot summer days.

Here’s a refreshing recipe for a summertime classic: Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. Simply toss in any fruit from your garden or your local farmer’s market, and you’ve got the perfect remedy for the dog days of summer.
